July 20, Jiangxi Daily ¨C Three nestlings were born in a nest on an electric pylon at Sanli Township, Jinxian County, beside Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake of China in Jiangxi Province. They are oriental white storks, an endangered species in the world, and China's grade one national wildlife conservation.
This oriental white stork family with five members was surprisingly found recently in Jiangxi as it's rare for such kind of migratory bird to stay somewhere. The oriental white storks usually migrate in November from Russia and northeast China to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River every year to spend winter and go back in next spring.

There are only 3,000 oriental white storks in the world, according to the World Bird Conservation Organization.
In May 2002, 13 white storks were discovered remaining on Poyang Lake rather than migrating to the north before summer as usual.

In March 2005, farmers of Sanlin Town saw a couple of white storks strolling in fields, and in May, a nest appearing on an electric pylon.
"It is rare that oriental white storks remained in south and reproduce here," said Professor Wang Qishan from Anhui University. "Maybe they were wounded and couldn't migrate to the north, or the ecosystem of the wetland around Poyang Lake has been improved so that white storks can find plenty of food."
